Film + Video Budgets, 5th Ed. Book Review By Erin V.

Especially for those just starting out, the information here is invaluable.  One of the most overwhelming aspects of your first film is trying to figure out how to make it all happen.  And if you want to get the most for your dollar and stay organized, you’re going to need a proper budget.  But where do you start?

By doing research.  And that’s why this book is a must read.  Finally, phrases like ‘line items,’ and the difference between ‘work hours’ vs. ‘pay hours’ will be made clear.  Plus, it has handy descriptions of what each person’s position on a film shoot actually entails.

Then, at the end of Film + Video Budgets, there are sample budgets for all different types of projects (feature, documentary, student short, etc).  Look for the template most similar to your project to get a feel for it.  But don’t just copy these.  You could end up with prices that don’t fit with what you have to spend – or need to spend – as explained in this book.

And most importantly, this book is easy to read, while still giving you what you need to know to better budget your film.  The new edition provides up to date info, so that whether you’re making anything from shorts to features, you’ll be well prepared.
