On August 3rd, I talked about Sony’s DVD releases of last year’s Best Foreign Language Film nominees The White Ribbon and A Prophet. Today, Mongrel Media is releasing fellow nominee Ajami on the home market.
Isreal’s selection for the Oscar’s 2009, Ajami is told through five different chapters all taking place in the Ajami neighbourhood, where racial and religious conflict cause violence between the city’s inhabitants. A gritty, believable crime story, this is one worth checking out.
The DVD includes the story behind the actors, deleted scenes, and a photo gallery. Ajami is 120 minutes and rated 14A.
Also on DVD today from Mongrel Media is Women Without Men. Set in 1953, this follows the lives of four Iranian women trying to find peace and understanding amidst cultural oppression and political strife. Women Without Men is 95 minutes and rated 18A.
