Day & Night Book Review By Erin V.

Earlier this year, when Toy Story 3 was released, a brilliant little short film played before it.  It was Day & Night.

When the short was first pitched at Pixar, director Teddy Newton also had the idea of doing a tie-in book.  Chronicle Books was approached and liked the idea, so along with making the film, Newton met with editors and simplified the short’s story into 40 pages of drawings and less than 30 lines of dialogue.  (Which is appropriate, since the short film is almost dialogue free…)

Since the short film used mostly sounds and music – not words – to tell it’s story, I was curious how the switch from screen to page would turn out.  But the visuals, also so much a part of the storytelling come through fine to portray the story.  Like I said, it is simplified with far less than the short film, but it is still a nice hardcover children’s book for fans of the short.  I personally enjoyed both.
