Today, the Criterion Collection is releasing The Darjeeling Limited on Blu-ray & DVD. Director Wes Anderson’s moving 2007 film follows the story of three estranged brothers (played wonderfully by Jason Schwartzman, Adrian Brody and Owen Wilson) who take a spiritual train journey across India, in an attempt to rediscover themselves and redefine their bond as siblings. Both subtly hilarious and deeply heartfelt, this is an excellent film.
Also included on the disc is the beautiful 13-minute short film Hotel Chevalier, which features Natalie Portman and serves as a nice prequel to the feature film. With their vibrant colours, striking cinematography and signature slow-motion shots, I’m a huge fan of Anderson’s work. All of his films, with the exception of last year’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, are now available on the prestigious Criterion Collection.
The Blu-ray includes a director-approved HD transfer, as well as audio commentary, featurettes, deleted/alternate scenes, and a behind the scenes documentary by Barry Braverman. Also included in the package is a nice fold out insert featuring an essay by critic Richard Brody and original illustrations by Eric Chase Anderson.
The Darjeeling Limited is 91 minutes and rated 14A.
