Today, the Charlie Chaplin classic Modern Times is being released to the prestigious Criterion Collection. Although opening in 1936 – almost a decade into the era of talkies – the film was free of dialogue, but famously contained moments of sound and song. Filled with memorable imagery and sharp commentary on class struggles during the Great Depression, Chaplin’s last outing as the Little Tramp further confirms his brilliance both as a director and physical entertainer.
The highly recommended two-disc set includes a new digital transfer, as well as numerous bonus features on the history of the film. Also included in the package is a booklet featuring an essay by film critic Saul Austerlitz, and a piece by film scholar Lisa Stein that includes excerpts from Chaplin’s writing on his 1930’s world tour.
Modern Times is 87 minutes and rated PG.
