The Making of Avatar Book Review By Erin V.
Last year, James Cameron’s Avatar was released, and with it came a book profiling the concept artwork that was done while making the film. This year, a new book has been published, called The Making of Avatar. It is a fascinating look at how the story and world of Pandora was developed for screen, as well as the production it involves for a mo-cap film.
The first thing I noticed while flipping through, is this book provides plenty of behind-the-scenes images of the actors in the capture suits compared with the final CG images. It got me thinking that the experience of acting in this kind of environment must be similar to practicing for a play before dress rehearsals – the costuming all has to be imagined. There is also a fair bit about the initial development phases of casting, artwork, digital costume and creature design, and how long it took to get a production this big made.
It is quite a technical book – leaning more towards text than visual-centric (although it still does have 500 photos/illustrations), but for anyone who is a fan of Avatar, or just interested in how films like this are made, it is a very worthwhile book to have.
