Riding the Alligator is unlike most other screenwriting books I’ve read. Not so much about the technicals of screenwriting, but rather about the art and passion of writing itself, it makes for a very interesting read.
Pen Densham talks a lot about his own methods for writing, including dealing with pitches, the inevitable rejection, and the stress that comes along with the whole creative business.
Of interesting note, chapter 14 dedicates itself to thoughts on the writing process from other well-known screenwriters, and chapter 15 has the reviews of 10 screenwriting books by USC film school students, providing a bit of a resource.
Throughout the 18 chapters, Pen Densham’s love for his craft clearly comes through and I would recommend this book to artists of all types. It’s a book you will enjoy reading to the end.
