Oscar-winning composer John Barry has died of a heart attack in New York.  He was 77 years old.

Over his long career, Barry is perhaps best known for writing the prolific and iconic James Bond theme, as well as for the music he provided to 11 other films in the popular franchise.  Outside of the Bond series, his music will be best remembered in such films as Dances with Wolves, Out of Africa and Born Free – to which he wrote the classic song.

John Barry is survived by his wife, four children and five grandchildren, and will be missed by many.  May he rest in peace.
