Winners of the 38th Annual Annie Awards

The 38th Annual Annie Awards were announced last night.  Honouring animation of all forms released in 2010, DreamWorks’ How To Train Your Dragon swept the awards with a total of 10 wins, and was named the best animated feature of last year.  Toy Story 3 lost in all nominated categories, but Pixar still picked up an award for their short film, Day & Night.

The results are likely in part due to the fact that Disney withdrew their sponsorship of the Annie Awards last year, and were not officially submitting their films for consideration.  Artists were allowed to submit their own work although many chose not to in a show of solidarity, making many of the categories be a no-contest for other studios.  However, Toy Story 3 still had several nominations in the major categories, as they were nominated by others in the industry.

The last time DreamWorks’ swept the Annies was in 2008 with Kung Fu Panda (which caused some argument in animation communities as it beat out Pixar’s Wall•E.)  Despite what many said after this, Disney•Pixar has frequently dominated the awards overall, except in the years of Warner Bros. The Iron Giant, DreamWorks’ Shrek, and Aardman’s Flushed Away.  Last year, which was a particularly strong year for animation saw a pretty even-split of awards with three each for Laika’s Coraline, and Disney’s The Princess and the Frog, two for Pixar’s Up, and one each for 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, and DreamWorks’ Monsters vs. Aliens.

Also worth a note is that Brad Bird – the director who has a solid record with all three of his animated films sweeping the Annies – was a recipient of the Winsor McCay Award.  The other recipients were Eric Goldberg, and Matt Groening.  All are deserving of this achievement.  The other pre-juried awards went to Ross Iwamoto (June Foray Award), Autodesk (Ub Iwerks Award), and Waking Sleeping Beauty (Special Achievement Award).
