The Art of Tron: Legacy Book Review By Erin V.

The original film Tron, was visually groundbreaking for the time and although it appears outdated by today’s standards, it feels appropriate as it reminds us of how old computers looked.  Everything is more glass and clean line oriented nowadays, as Tron: Legacy emphasizes, creating a reasonable revamp from the original world of The Grid.

The Art of Tron: Legacy’s dust jacket is an image of a blue light-cycle that when lifted up, reveals a yellow bike underneath.  Included inside are hundreds of images of concept art, stills from the film, as well as a few comparison shots from the original 1982 Tron.  The text in the book (which is very sparsely sprinkled throughout) is written by Justin Springer, and is informative about the designs and filmmaking process.  From vehicles, to characters, to locations, this is a visual look into the world of 2010’s Tron: Legacy.

Although it’s been out for a couple of months now, in light of the fact that Tron: Legacy is nominated for an Academy Award (in the Sound Editing category), I figured I’d profile this book.  This was a film all about the visual style, sound, and FX, and for anyone into Tron or just interested in the art behind such a visually powered film, this is a book to read.  For the images alone, it’s worth it.
