The winners of the 31st Annual Genie Awards were announced today in Ottawa.  Honouring the best of 2010 in Canadian film, Quebec’s Incendies swept the awards with 8 wins, including Best Picture.  Secondary frontrunner Barney’s Version picked up 7 awards.  It was particularly nice to see recognition in some of the other categories for underappreciated Canadian films like Defendor and The Trotsky.

 

As for the show itself, I personally found the poorly edited hour of the presentation that was broadcast on CBC this evening was underwhelming, including legendary William Shatner as the host.  In my opinion the choice to profile each of the five Best Picture nominees with the remixed soundtrack of a DJ was just insulting.  Jay Baruchel got the best moment when he accepted a special award that was voted on by the public, delivering the sort of amusing speech that we have come to expect from the rising star.
