Storyline Book Review By Erin V.

Often as writers we’re told to ‘write what we know,’ and there is truth that there are certain themes or angles that we come back to again and again, although we may not know why.  By writing stories that parallel similar experiences we’ve had, we are able to add a more believable human element to a fictional story, by understanding the situation from an insider’s perspective.

But how do we do this?  In part, it may come naturally, but other times, we do not realize how many experiences we’ve had that can actually help our writing spring to life, or how to harness them.  The way that Storyline is written, (asking you to examine your own life story while reading), guarantees that no two people will have the same experience reading it.  And it also guarantees that it will get you really thinking about how to allow your life experiences to help your writing.

We are all writers at one point or another, whether we do it professionally or just have an assignment every once in a while.  And, whether we know it or not, most of us are storytellers – because even conversation is telling a story of sorts.  Accessible for writers of all genres, fiction or nonfiction, Storyline is a well-written and interesting take on the world of storytelling and storytellers in life.
