I would definitely recommend writers – or anyone interested in storytelling from a sociological standpoint – reading this book. Why? Well, sometimes a first draft can seem pretty bad. Everything is spelled out, leaving nothing to imagination, making even the most interesting story seem dull. But often, as you look over your work, it’s hard to figure out why this is.
The answer is subtext. By leaving some things unsaid, yet revealed through careful language and action, the audience is allowed to become more fully engrossed in the story. We use it in real life all the time, but by nature, it’s often elusive to us. Reading this book helps you to grasp an understanding of how to recognize, and more importantly how to write, subtext.
Even from a purely sociological standpoint, Writing Subtext is an interesting look at how we use subtext in real life. Because I challenge you to find someone who speaks without subtext – even if they only use it subconsciously. It’s a naturally-blended part of emotion and language, which is what makes it so important to harness in storytelling.
