The green screen or chromakeying effects that big-budget blockbusters have us take for granted often seem elusive to indie and starting out filmmakers without a studio and a lot of money behind them. But as authors Jeremy Hanke and Michele Yamazaki explain, it’s not as elusive as you might think.

Starting with a brief history of chromakey effects, and taking us through the creation of your own greenscreen, they takes us on a fascinating and comprehensive journey from start to finish in the process. Lighting the screen, camera techniques, finding footage (or creating it) to fit your background, and the in-computer technicals on how to actually lift out the green/blue screen and fill it with your images.

The first half of the book is in regular B & W print, but the second half is in glossy colour, which is amazingly useful to fully see the examples of the keying. Colour correction, how to fix problems, and making the shots look like one believable image is all covered here. While the book is from 2009 (third printing 2011) and that means some of the software references may be a bit out of date, the rest of the information is invaluable for those wanting to learn how to create their own greenscreen effects in films. The information here is extremely technical and in-depth while also being easy to read, which is great for those starting out.
