Sony Pictures Classics is releasing Love is Strange on Blu-ray today, a small gem that deserves more attention. When Ben (John Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) finally get married after nearly four decades together, George is fired from his teaching job, forcing them to sell their Manhattan apartment and stay separately with their respective family and friends, until they can find a new place to live.
Beautifully framed, and featuring some lovely uses of classical music, Love is Strange is a bittersweet and quietly touching little film. Every scene of the believable and heartfelt screenplay feels refreshingly natural, allowing Alfred Molina and John Lithgow to deliver a pair of wonderfully nuanced performances, with immensely charming chemistry together.
The Blu-ray includes commentary with John Lithgow, Alfred Molina and director Ira Sachs, a “making of” featurette and a Q&A from the Los Angeles Film Festival.
Love is Strange is 95 minutes and rated 14A.
