At noon EST today, the International Film Music Critics Association announced its winners for musical scoring in 2014.  Congratulations to all the nominees and winners!

Taking home the award for Film Score of the Year is composer Hans Zimmer for Interstellar.  This is his nineteenth nomination and third win since the awards started in 2004.  Composer of the Year went to Alexandre Desplat for his impressive body of work in 2014, including Godzilla, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, and The Monuments Men.  The Grand Budapest Hotel also took home the award for Best Score for a Comedy Film.  

Breakout Composer of the Year went to Mica Levi for Under the Skin.  Best Score for a Fantasy/Science Fiction/Horror Film went to James Newton Howard for Maleficent, and Best Original Score for an Animated Feature went to John Powell for How to Train Your Dragon 2.  HTTYD 2 also picked up a second award, with the track “Flying with Mother” being named Film Music Composition of the Year, a much deserved win in a very strong category of nominees.

As always, the awards reflect a mix of more and lesser known composers and films, as well as the opinions of an international body of critics.  All in all, it was an impressive year for scoring, both on the indie and studio side of things.
