Blu-ray Release: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: Director’s Cut

By John Corrado

The Wrath of Khan Blu-rayArguably the most famous of all the Star Trek films, longtime fan favourite Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan has gotten an impressive new Blu-ray transfer, including both the theatrical version and director’s cut of the 1982 classic.

The second entry into the motion picture anthology, the film follows Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Vulcan Spock (Leonard Nimoy) as they face off against the vengeful Khan (Ricardo Montalban), one of the most iconic villains in the series, to protect the top secret Project Genesis.

The film itself remains a solidly entertaining piece of science fiction, that finds genuine emotional resonance in the last act, and features some of the best character moments of the entire series.  It also looks great on Blu-ray, and fans won’t be disappointed by the splendid image quality.

The Blu-ray also includes commentary tracks with director Nicholas Meyer on both versions of the film, as well as multiple featurettes on the production, storyboards and a farewell to Ricardo Montalban.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: Director’s Cut is a Paramount Home Media Distribution release.  The theatrical cut is 113 minutes and the director’s cut is 116 minutes, both are rated PG.
