Blu-ray Review: The Magnificent Seven

By John Corrado

the-magnificent-seven-blu-rayAfter her husband is killed by a capitalist land baron (Peter Saarsgard), Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett) enlists bounty hunter Sam Chisholm (Denzel Washington) to help her get vengeance and protect their land.  Sam rounds up a motley crew (Chris Pratt, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Ethan Hawke, Byung-hun Lee, Vincent D’Onofrio, Martin Sensmeier) to help prepare the town for the coming showdown.

A remake of the classic 1960 western, which was itself adapted from Akira Kirusawa’s Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven is a remake that works thanks to its diverse cast, and it features some thrilling shootouts finely staged by director Antoine Fuqua.  For more on the film itself, you can read my full review right here.

The Blu-ray also includes deleted scenes, as well as multiple featurettes, and the option to watch the film in Vengeance Mode, offering a mix between picture-in-picture commentary and “behind the scenes” footage presented by the director and cast.

The Magnificent Seven is a Sony Pictures release.  It’s 134 minutes and rated 14A.
