Blu-ray Review: Downsizing

By John Corrado

The latest from Alexander Payne, Downsizing follows a working class man from Omaha named Paul Safraneck (Matt Damon), who decides to undergo a new procedure to shrink himself down to the size of an action figure, so that he can reduce his carbon footprint and live a grand life at a fraction of the cost.  The film is now out on Blu-ray.

Although Downsizing might not be Alexander Payne’s best film – it aims for the stars and doesn’t always land – this is still an ambitious work from a filmmaker with something to say, and I think it’s worth checking out.  For more on the film itself, you can read my full review right here.

The Blu-ray also includes a total of six featurettes.  First up is Working With Alexander, which features various actors and crew members praising the director’s work; The Cast focuses on the all-star roster of actors in the film, right down to the smaller roles; A Visual Journey and A Matter of Perspective both focus on the seamless visual effects and how they achieved the proper sense of scale in the film through a mix of green screens and in-camera tricks; That Smile is a look at Matt Damon’s kindness and generosity on set; and A Global Concern has the cast and crew talking about differences they have made in their own lives to help fight climate change.

Downsizing is a Paramount Home Media Distribution release.  It’s 135 minutes and rated 14A.
