When the four old friends Diane (Diane Keaton), Vivian (Jane Fonda), Sharon (Candice Bergen) and Carol (Mary Steenburgen) decide to read Fifty Shades of Grey for their monthly book club, the text inspires them to reinvigorate their own love lives by finding new relationships or spicing up their old ones.

Spurred on by this collective urge to embrace physical pleasure in their twilight years, Diane starts having a fling with a pilot (Andy Garcia) that she meets on a flight; Vivian starts reconnecting with an old flame (Don Johnson) who happens to be staying at the hotel that she operates; Sharon decides to try her hand at online dating; and Carol tries to reignite her sex life with her husband (Craig T. Nelson).

Bolstered by a sparkling cast of veteran actresses, who share some fun chemistry together, Book Club is a frothy and fairly standard romantic comedy that doesn’t really bring anything new to the genre. But it’s also pleasant enough to watch, as predictable as it may be. The film is light as a feather, and doesn’t really leave much of a mark in a good or bad way, but it’s still an entirely inconsequential piece of feel good entertainment for more mature audiences.

The Blu-ray also includes a selection of deleted and extended scenes, as well as the five featurettes It All Started With a Book, Casting Book Club, Location, Location, Location, A New Chapter and Living in the Moment.

Book Club is a Paramount Home Media Distribution release. It’s 103 minutes and rated PG.
