The remake of Child’s Play, which many assumed would be another needless horror redo, actually ended up being one of the better surprises of the summer moviegoing season for me. It’s a twisted and often very enjoyable film that is more entertaining than it probably had any right to be, and it’s now available on Blu-ray as of this week.

The film reimagines the 1988 classic with Chucky (voiced by Mark Hamill) as an app-controlled “smart doll” that is given to the lonely Andy (Gabriel Bateman) by his mother (Aubrey Plaza), and this time around the doll is actually somewhat sympathetic, at least until he turns murderous. It’s a clever, modern twist on the original, and it worked for me. For more on the film itself, my full review can be found right here.

The Blu-ray also includes the three short promotional featurettes Meet the Cast, Interactive Buddi, and Bringing Chucky to Life, as well as a pair of short claymation pieces by British stop motion animator Lee Hardcastle that are inspired by the film. Last but not least, the disc has a Buddi Sing-A-Long that allows us to sing along to Chucky’s oddly endearing but also kinda creepy “Buddi Song.” A digital copy is also included.

Child’s Play is an Elevation Pictures release. It’s 90 minutes and rated 14A.
