New This Week (04/14/2023): Showing Up, How to Blow Up a Pipeline, Renfield, & More!

New releases for the week of April 14th, 2023.

Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult in Renfield

Theatrical Releases:

Showing Up (Limited/TIFF Bell Lightbox): Kelly Reichardt’s eighth feature follows a sculptor (played by Michelle Willaims in her fourth collaboration with the director) over a chaotic week leading up to an art exhibit. It’s a solid addiction to Reichardt’s impressive oeuvre of slice-of-life films about ordinary people going about their lives in Oregon, while also adding some levity to it. Williams is very good in the leading role, and it’s all captured in Reichardt’s usual naturalistic, observational style, which is infused with elements of dry humour. (Full Review)

How to Blow Up a Pipeline (Limited Release): I’ve been hearing strong buzz about director Daniel Goldhaber’s provocatively titled film since it premiered at TIFF last year. It’s a thriller following a group of eco-terrorists plotting to blow up a pipeline. Reviews are solid and it’s unsurprisingly stirring up some controversy. I’m looking forward to checking it out soon for what I’m hearing is a taut, thought-provoking ride. (Full Review)

Renfield (Wide Release): Nicolas Cage hamming it up as Dracula is basically the pitch for this horror comedy from Universal, which also co-stars Nicholas Hoult and looks to be more campy than scary. The reviews for it seem to be generally mixed, but I’ll still check it out at some point for Cage’s performance.
