New releases for the week of June 30th, 2023.

Theatrical Releases:
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Wide Release): The fifth film in the Indiana Jones franchise, following 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny finds director James Mangold taking over the reins from Steven Spielberg. It’s not in the same league as the original trilogy, but works often enough as an entertaining and mostly satisfying legacy sequel that lets Harrison Ford don the fedora one last time (joined by Phoebe Waller-Bridge as heir apparent), with Mangold giving the character a decent final send-off. Maybe a little long, but I had fun with it, and enjoyed it overall. (Full Review)
Every Body (Limited Release): This latest documentary from filmmaker Julie Cohen (RBG, Julia) focuses on the experiences of intersex people who make up the I in LGBTQIA. Following three intersex subjects, Cohen lets these individuals tell their stories in their own words, as they work to stop medically unnecessary surgeries from being performed on children who are born intersex. It’s fascinating and highly engaging stuff, shedding important light on an underrepresented group. (Full Review)
Making Time (Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema): Director Liz Unna’s documentary Making Time follows five horologists, including actor and independent watchmaker Aldis Hodge. Aside from just being a documentary about watchmakers (and the people who buy these luxury items), Making Time also offers poignant reflection on the passage of time, with its more heady themes of life, death and rebirth as the subjects reflect on moments from their lives and their connections to the ancient history of timekeeping. Unna packs a lot into her film’s 75 minute running time, offering an artful and reflective documentary experience. Opens July 2nd in Toronto (June 30th in Vancouver), before being released on VOD across Canada on September 12th.
