New This Week (09/15/2023): A Haunting in Venice, Golden Delicious, & More!

By John Corrado

New releases for the week of September 15th, 2023.

Kenneth Branagh in A Haunting in Venice

Theatrical Releases:

A Haunting in Venice (Wide Release): The third film in director-star Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie murder mystery series, finds detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) investigating a murder during a seance in Venice, with an all-star cast that includes recent Best Actress winner Michelle Yeoh and Branagh’s Belfast stars Jude Hill and Jamie Dornan. After Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, A Haunting in Venice also has the best reviews of the trilogy so far, so I am curious to check it out at some point.

Golden Delicious (Limited Release): Jason Karman’s directorial debut Golden Delicious – which played at the Canadian Film Fest and Inside Out earlier this year – is a coming of age sports drama that follows a Chinese-Canadian teen (Cardi Wong) in Vancouver, who is trying to balance his demanding father’s (Ryan Mah) expectations for him to play professional basketball, with his crush on the new guy (Chris Carson) across the street. This is very much a formula picture that hues closely to the beats of the coming-of-age (and coming out) genre, but the cultural specificity and decent performances keep it entertaining. It’s a decent Canadian film that is worth checking out. (Inside Out 2023 Review)

More Releases: After Everything (Wide), The Retirement Plan (Limited)

Elemental (Disney+), El Conde (Netflix), Love at First Sight (Netflix), Rotting in the Sun (MUBI)
