By John Corrado

New releases for the week of September 22nd, 2023.

Paul Dano in Dumb Money

Theatrical Releases:

Dumb Money (Limited Release): Following a world premiere at TIFF, Dumb Money is starting its run in limited release this week. Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya), the film serves as an entertaining dramatization of the GameStop saga, when regular people started buying stocks in the video game store on the advice of YouTuber Roaring Kitty (played by Paul Dano), finding a way to earn a profit against hedge fund managers who were trying to short the stock. Buoyed by a strong ensemble, the film does a good job of condensing this story into a fast-paced and consistently enjoyable 104 minutes. Expands on September 29th. (TIFF 2023 Review)

More Releases: Expend4bles (Wide), It Lives Inside (Wide), Reptile (Limited), Stellar (Limited), Radical Wolfe (Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema), Bad Press (Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema)

Streaming Releases:

No One Will Save You (Disney+): Kaitlyn Dever stars in this sci-fi flick as a young woman who lives alone dealing with a home invasion involving tall, grey aliens. Written and directed by Brian Duffield (Spontaneous), this is a pretty good mix of home invasion thriller and alien invasion movie that is most unique for its minimal dialogue and creepy atmosphere. If the last act gets a bit too convoluted, Dever carries the film with a very good, mostly physical performance. It’s got some cool alien thrills, but is mainly worth seeing as a showcase for her.
