Blu-ray Review: Star Trek: The Picard Legacy Collection

November 7, 2023

By John Corrado

This week, Paramount is releasing Star Trek: The Picard Legacy Collection on Blu-ray, an individually numbered, limited edition set including every movie and TV series featuring Patrick Stewart’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard in one very nice box.

Limited to 11,750 copies worldwide, this is a truly impressive, 54-disc set that combines all seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the three seasons of Star Trek: Picard, and the four Next Gen movies Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection and Star Trek: Nemesis.

The collection is impressive not only for the amount of content it includes in terms of the shows and movies, but also for the presentation and the various other goodies included in the box. The packaging itself is instantly impressive, coming in a hefty square box made out of sturdy cardboard with a black bottom and red lid with gold lettering, that lifts off to reveal what’s inside.

On top, is a lift-off tray containing an exclusive edition of the small hardcover book The Wisdom of Picard featuring new artwork and quotes, a card-sized certificate of authenticity, as well as a sheet of magnets featuring Captain Picard’s badges. Underneath is a deck of playing cards and four Chateau Picard drink coasters slotted into cardboard separators between the four cases containing the discs.

We have two oversized plastic clamshell cases containing Star Trek: The Next Generation (split into seasons 1-4 and seasons 5-7), and a pair of separate Blu-ray cases holding editions of Star Trek: Picard – The Complete Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation – 4-Movie Collection. The sets all feature matching red cover art, and exclusive red slipcovers for Star Trek: Picard and the 4-movie collection (the discs are all labelled with Star Trek: The Picard Legacy Collection as well).

In terms of the content itself, this is all material that has been previously made available (including standard releases of Star Trek: Picard – The Complete Series and the 4-movie collection earlier this year), and the exclusion of the 4K versions of the movies will be a deterrence for some. But Star Trek: The Picard Legacy Collection brings them all together into one eye-catching set that will prove highly tempting for serious collectors.

The packaging is styled like a keepsake box of mementos, which is fitting considered it’s built around Captain Picard’s legacy, and it’s pretty clear that time and care have gone into the design. This is simply a really nice (if pricey) box set, and the other collectibles like the book, magnets, cards and coasters are a fine touch as well. If you have the space and budget for it, this is a great centrepiece collection that really stands out on a shelf. A gallery of my unboxing photos and a rundown of bonus features is below.
