New This Week (12/15/2023): Poor Things, Wonka, & More!

December 15, 2023

By John Corrado

New releases for the week of December 15th, 2023.

Emma Stone in Poor Things

Theatrical Releases:

Poor Things (Limited Release): This latest from Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (following his Oscar-winning The Favourite) is a weird and wonderful riff on Frankenstein, brought to the screen with some eye-popping visual style. Emma Stone stars as Bella Baxter, a young woman reanimated with a baby brain in her head by her mad scientist creator (Willem Dafoe). It’s a twisted premise that allows Stone to deliver an absolutely astonishing tragicomic performance. One of the year’s most entertaining and memorable experiences. (Full Review)

Wonka (Wide Release): Timothée Chalamet stars as Willy Wonka in this origin story of the eccentric chocolatier from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I’ve heard it’s a musical, and I’m mainly curious to check this one out because it’s directed by Paul King, who did the first two Paddington movies (and left the third one to direct Wonka). I’m probably gonna see it over the holidays.

More Releases: Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire (TIFF Bell Lightbox), Immediate Family (Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema)

Streaming Releases:

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Digital), Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (Netflix), The Family Plan (Apple TV+), Finestkind (Paramount+)
