New releases for the week of February 2nd, 2024.

Theatrical Releases:
Argylle (Wide Release): Who is the real Agent Argylle? That’s the question asked in the marketing for this new spy movie from director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Kingsman), adapted from author Elly Conway’s book. It features a star-studded cast that includes Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell and Dua Lipa. The reviews are somewhat tepid, but I’m still curious to check it out before it gets completely spoiled on social media (if it hasn’t been already).
Fitting In (Limited Release): This Canadian coming-of-age film from writer-director Molly McGlynn, which played at TIFF last year, explores a teenage girl (Maddie Ziegler) discovering that she was born with a rare reproductive condition. McGlynn’s semi-autobiographical film handles sensitive subject matter in an often humorous but still respectful and serious way, grounded by a fine dramatic performance from Ziegler. It’s a solid teen dramedy that is worth checking out. (TIFF 2023 Review)
More Releases: The Chosen: Season 4 – Episodes 1-3 (Limited)
Streaming Releases:
Orion and the Dark (Netflix): The main reason why I’m curious to check out this new DreamWorks animated film, which is being released exclusively on Netflix, is because it’s written by Charlie Kaufman, the mastermind behind mature films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and I’m Thinking of Ending Things. Kaufman’s previous foray into animation was the adult stop-motion film Anomalisa, so I’m curious to see what he brings to this all-ages tale about about a little boy facing his fear of the dark.
