New releases for the week of March 1st, 2024.
Theatrical Releases:
Dune: Part Two (Wide Release): This follow-up to 2021’s Dune is massive filmmaking in every sense, as Denis Villeneuve builds upon the first film. Timothée Chalamet continues to prove himself as one of our best young actors as Paul Atreides comes into his role as a Messianic figure, and Austin Butler is chilling as his sadistic counterpart. Epic fight scenes, sweeping visuals, a great sense of scope. I saw it yesterday on a regular screen, and already want to see it again in IMAX. (Full Review)
About Dry Grasses (Limited Release): The latest work from Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan (2014 Palme d’Or winner Winter Sleep), About Dry Grasses is an involving character drama following a middle-aged art teacher (Deniz Celiloğlu) in Eastern Anatolia, that uses its lengthy 198 minute running time to absorb us in the lives its of its subjects. As I wrote in my 3.5-star review, “in its own way, this makes for immersive cinema.” (Full Review)
