4K Ultra HD Review: Dune: Part Two

June 5, 2024

By John Corrado

Please note that this is a review of the 4K Ultra HD release of Dune: Part Two. For my full thoughts on the film itself, you can read my original review right here.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is still one of the best movies of the year so far (and also the highest grossing at the box office), and it’s now available on physical media, including 4K Ultra HD.

Picking up where 2021’s Part One left off, the film continues the journey of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), who is taking refuge with the Fremen and training to become a warrior, to get revenge on the Harkonnen for killing his family.

Villeneuve allows time to explore the dense mythology, political themes, and deeper religious allegories of Frank Herbert’s original book, while also delivering the massive sense of scope and visually striking set-pieces.

While Dune: Part Two was made for theatres, the 4K Ultra HD disc presents the best viewing option at home. This is quite a dark picture at times, but the 2160p disc manages to deliver a good contrast, along with fine details (such as sand grains and spice blowing in the wind) and exceptional clarity on pores and skin tones in closeups.

Film Rating: ★★★½ (out of 4)

Bonus Features (4K Ultra HD):

The 4K disc includes an excellent array of bonus features covering various aspects of the production. A code for a digital copy is also included in the package, which ships with a standard slipcover.

Chakobsa Training (4 minutes, 51 seconds): A look at how the actors approached learning the fake language heard in the film.

Creating the Fremen World (11 minutes, 41 seconds): A look at designing the world of the Fremen, including building the caves.

Finding the Worlds of Dune (6 minutes, 24 seconds): A look at shooting on locations in Italy, Jordan, Abu Dhabi and Namibia.

Buzz Around the New “Thopter” (3 minutes, 51 seconds): A look at designing the look (and sound) of the upgraded ornithopter seen in the film.

Worm-Riding (9 minutes, 23 seconds): A look at how they crafted the worm-riding sequences, through a mix of filming the actors and stunt doubles standing on a worm skin rig and visual effects.

Becoming Feyd (7 minutes, 33 seconds): Focuses on Austin Butler’s transformation into the role of villain Feyd-Rautha, including his black teeth and bald wig.

A New Set of Threads (7 minutes, 40 seconds): Jacqueline West discuses her new costumes for Part Two, which were inspired by different cultures.

Deeper Into the Desert: The Sounds of the Dune (12 minutes, 59 seconds): Hans Zimmer discusses building upon his Oscar-winning score for the first film (including crafting the love theme), and how it blends in with the sound design.

Dune: Part Two is a Warner Bros. Home Entertainment release. It’s 166 minutes and rated PG.

A great review. I had an opportunity to watch this movie a couple of months ago and absolutely loved it. I thought that it was a fantastic sequel that managed to improve upon the predecessor. I also really appreciated the authentic depiction of the Middle East in the movie. One of the year’s best films.

Here’s why I adored the film:
