Theatrical Releases:

Inside Out 2 (Wide Release): Pixar’s latest is a sequel to their 2015 masterpiece Inside Out, once again taking us inside the mind of Riley (Kensington Tallman) and her emotions. Riley’s a teenager now, forcing Joy (Amy Poehler) and the rest of the crew to deal with the arrival of new emotions, including Anxiety (Maya Hawke). This was my most anticipated movie of the year, and I’m so glad to report that it lives up to the hype, with Pixar delivering a worthy sequel that builds upon the complexity of the first one (which was my favourite movie of 2015). The film is fast-paced and often very funny, while also delivering those emotional gut-punches. As I said in my review, it’s a work of genius. (Full Review)

Tuesday (Limited Release): This A24 drama stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the grieving mother of a teenaged daughter (Lola Petticrew) with terminal cancer, who befriends death in the form of a talking bird (voiced by Arinzé Kene). I imagine it will be a powerful, cathartic viewing experience for some, but this tonally uneven fantasy melodrama never really came together for me. Louis-Dreyfus is good, but I also think she has been better in other roles that allowed her to show dramatic range. (Full Review)
