New This Week (06/21/2024): Thelma, The Bikeriders, & More!

By John Corrado

New releases for the week of June 21st, 2024.

Richard Roundtree and June Squibb in Thelma

Theatrical Releases:

Thelma (Limited Release): June Squibb stars in this indie character dramedy, which is pitched as a senior citizen’s action comedy. It mainly serves as a wonderful leading showcase for Squibb, who shines in the titular role as a feisty 93-year-old trying to retrieve thousands of dollars after falling victim to phone scammers. It’s an enjoyable film. (Full Review)

The Bikeriders (Wide Release): This latest from filmmaker Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special, Mud, Take Shelter) stars Austin Butler, Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy in the story of a 1960s biker gang. I like the actors, and enjoyed Nichols’ aforementioned previous films. So I’m curious to check this one out now that it’s finally in theatres, after having its release date pushed back six months due to the strike last year (and being sold to Focus Features after being dumped by 20th Century Studios).

More Releases: The Exorcism (Wide), Fancy Dance (Limited), The Boy in the Woods (Limited), I Am Celine Dion (Limited)

Streaming Releases:

Jeanne du Barry (VOD), Trigger Warning (Netflix), In The Land of Saints and Sinners (Prime Video), Drive-Away Dolls (Prime Video)
