New This Week (06/28/2024): A Quiet Place: Day One, Kinds of Kindness, & More!

June 28, 2024

By John Corrado

New releases for the week of June 28th, 2024.

Lupita Nyong’o as “Samira” in A Quiet Place: Day One from Paramount Pictures.

Theatrical Releases:

A Quiet Place: Day One (Wide Release): This very solid prequel to John Krasinski’s two thrillers finds Michael Sarnoski (Pig) taking over as director, with the action being relocated to New York City. The film balances monster movie suspense with surprisingly somber character drama, carried by a pair of strong performances from Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn. It’s a big summer blockbuster that also has a genuine emotional payoff. (Full Review)

Kinds of Kindness (Limited Release): This latest film from Yorgos Lanthimos starring Emma Stone arrives just a few months after their previous collaboration Poor Things won Stone her second Oscar. This film is a triptych anthology that finds Lanthimos reuniting with Greek screenwriter Efthimis Filippou (Dogtooth, The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer) to combine three separate stories. The film premiered at Cannes, where Jesse Plemons won the Best Actor prize. I’m a big Lanthimos fan, so I’m hyped to check this one out, and see what darkly comic delights he has in store this time around.

More Releases: Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One (Wide Release), Daddio (Limited Release), Protocol 7 (Limited), Ghostlight (TIFF Lightbox)

Streaming Releases:

Brats (Disney+), The Bear: Season 3 (Disney+), A Family Affair (Netflix), Fancy Dance (Apple TV+), I Am Celine Dion (Prime Video)
