The first trailer has been released for the upcoming A24 movie We Live in Time. The romantic drama from director John Crowley (Brooklyn) stars Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, and is described as a “decade-spanning, deeply moving romance.” It was just announced yesterday that the film will have it’s world premiere at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival in September.
This looks like it could be a somewhat standard romantic weepie as opposed to an Oscar contender, but I’ll reserve judgement until I see it at TIFF in a couple months. The two great leads certainly elevate the material, and I adored Crowley’s Brooklyn which I saw at TIFF in 2015, so that helps as well (though his The Goldfinch adaptation which notoriously premiered at TIFF in 2019 didn’t draw the same acclaim).
Sphere Films is releasing the film in theatres in Canada on October 11th, trailer and official synopsis are below. Please comment your thoughts if you have watched the trailer!
“Almut (Florence Pugh) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield) are brought together in a surprise encounter that changes their lives. Through snapshots of their life together — falling for each other, building a home, becoming a family — a difficult truth is revealed that rocks its foundation. As they embark on a path challenged by the limits of time, they learn to cherish each moment of the unconventional route their love story has taken, in filmmaker John Crowley’s decade-spanning, deeply moving romance.”
