New This Week (07/12/2024): Longlegs, Fly Me to the Moon, & More!

By John Corrado

New releases for the week of July 12th, 2024.

Theatrical Releases:

Longlegs (Wide Release): This latest from writer-director Osgood Perkins is a deeply unsettling mix of horror movie and police procedural. Maika Monroe stars as a rookie FBI agent put on the somewhat cold case of a serial killer who calls himself Longlegs, played by Nicolas Cage in a genuinely disturbing performance. I saw it at the beginning of the week at a press screening, and was gripped throughout. As I wrote in my review, “there’s just something about it that feels haunted and even cursed in a way that really gets under your skin, and Perkins does an excellent job of maintaining this tense and creepy atmosphere throughout.” It’s the real deal. Fly Me to the Moon (Wide Release): Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson star in this 1960s-set romantic comedy about the relationship that forms between a marketing executive and a NASA official around shooting a fake version of the moon landing. Reviews are decent for this period piece rom-com, and it looks fun and charming. It’s playing in theatres before coming to Apple TV+ at a later date.
