Theatrical Releases:

Deadpool & Wolverine (Wide Release): Marvel’s highly anticipated team-up between Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) has finally arrived. I saw it at a press screening earlier in the week, and it’s a lot of fun. As I wrote, it “delivers exactly what you want out of a third Deadpool movie, while also providing an entertaining official introduction for the character into the MCU, and a satisfying send-off for the Fox era of superhero movies.” The film is on track to have a record opening weekend at the box office, and will go down as one of the biggest movies of the year. Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger (Limited Release): Director David Hinton’s expansive documentary, which was one of the best films I saw at this year’s Hot Docs, offers an absorbing mix of film essay and tribute to cinematic masters Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, narrated by Martin Scorsese. Scorsese offers a thorough deep-dive into their filmography, eloquently taking us through personal favourites like The Tales of Hoffman, A Matter of Life and Death, and The Red Shoes. It’s an invaluable film history lesson. (Hot Docs 2024 Review)

Doubles (Limited Release): This Canadian drama, which played as the opening night selection of the Canadian Film Fest earlier this year, follows a humble street vendor (Sanjiv Boodhu) from Trinidad, who travels to Toronto to help his estranged father (Errol Sitahal). It’s a poignant, touching human interest story, carried by authentic performances. (Canadian Film Fest Review)

More Releases: The Fabulous Four (Wide), Crossing (TIFF Lightbox)
