New releases for the week of August 2nd, 2024.

Theatrical Releases:
Trap (Wide Release): M. Night Shyamalan returns with this serial killer thriller set a pop concert, starring Josh Hartnett (and the director’s own daughter Saleka Shyamalan as the pop singer). It wasn’t screened for critics, but I’ll be seeing it next week. I also did some background work on the film when it was shooting in Toronto last fall, so I’m curious and excited to see it.
Sing Sing (Limited Release): Colman Domingo stars in this moving based-on-a-true-story drama set inside the Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York, that follows a group of prisoners as they put on a stage play. Domingo delivers a powerhouse in the lead, and is backed up by an excellent supporting cast that includes formerly incarcerated actors, adding a layer of authenticity to the film. It’s an early Oscar favourite, and one of the best movies of the year. (Full Review)
