Warner Bros. has just released the first full-length trailer for Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, the Korean director’s new film following his Oscar-winning Parasite in 2019. The film was supposed to come out this past March, but somewhat curiously had its release date pushed back to January 31st, 2025, fully bypassing an Oscar run.
Adapted from Edward Ashton’s 2022 science fiction novel Mickey7, the film stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, a man who signs up to be an “expendable” for a space mission, allowing his body to be cloned and regenerated every time one of him dies. It’s an interesting and absurd premise, that returns Bong Joon Ho to the sci-fi genre following his excellent 2014 film Snowpiercer.
I’m not sure what I was expecting, but this looks really fun. The trailer is set to Dean Martin and Nelson Riddle’s “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head,” giving it a comedic, darkly funny tone, as Pattinson appears to be having a blast getting to play around with goofy accents in multiple roles. That January release date is even more baffling now; I’m genuinely confused why they didn’t at least try to push this one for awards consideration following the historic success of Parasite, but it’s also not the first time that a studio has mishandled the release of a Bong Joon Ho movie.
I’m excited for this one either way, since anything that Bong puts out now should be treated as an event movie. The full trailer is below, please feel free to comment your thoughts once you have watched it!
