Trailer Released for Emilia Pérez

By John Corrado

Netflix has released the full trailer for Emilia Pérez, French filmmaker Jacques Audiard’s mix of cartel thriller, Mexican melodrama, and flashy musical, starring the “power trio” of Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez (who collectively won the Best Actress prize at Cannes).

I saw this film when it played at TIFF, where it was the first runner-up for the People’s Choice Award (you can read my festival review here). The trailer does a very good job of selling the film’s electric tone, including the colourful visuals and bold musical numbers, without giving away much of the plot. And that’s a good thing. Audiard’s film is enjoyable to watch for how it takes us on a ride, so it’s best not to know too much going in. We also get a glimpse at the strong performances.

The film is opening in select theatres on November 1st, before streaming exclusively on Netflix as of November 13th, and is primed to be a big awards contender. The full trailer is below, and feel free to comment your thoughts if you have watched it (or have already seen the film).
