New This Week (01/03/2025): Vermiglio, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, & More!

By John Corrado

New releases for the week of January 3rd, 2025.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl

Theatrical Releases:

Vermiglio (Limited Release): Director Maura Delpero’s Vermiglio is Italy’s International Feature submission for the Oscars. The film is set at the end of World War II, but the war is happening entirely offscreen. Instead, this is a slow-burn slice-of-life portrait of a large family in the mountain village of Vermiglio, who are hiding a deserter from Sicily (Giuseppe De Domenico) in their barn. Delpero’s film focuses mainly on the daughters of the family. It’s nominated in the international category at the Golden Globes this weekend, and made the Oscar shortlist. Opens at TIFF Lightbox in Toronto. (Full Review)

More Releases: Harbin (Limited), Se7en: 30th Anniversary IMAX Exclusive (Limited)

Streaming Releases:

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (Netflix): It’s a new Wallace & Gromit movie, that’s reason enough to be excited. This second feature for the man and dog duo, following 2005’s Oscar-winning The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, sees the return of penguin villain Feathers McGraw from the (also Oscar-winning) 1993 short film The Wrong Trousers. A new stop-motion project from Aardman is always something to look forward to. It’s up for Best Animated at the Golden Globes, and also made the Oscar shortlist. Arriving on Netflix after a short run in theatres in December. (Review coming soon!)
