The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards have just been announced. Leading the pack is the audacious musical Emilia Pérez with thirteen nominations, a huge win for Netflix. It’s followed closely by The Brutalist and Wicked with ten nominations apiece.
The Best Picture lineup is rounded out by Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Nickel Boys, I’m Still Here, The Substance, and Wicked. The biggest surprise here is I’m Still Here getting into the lineup of ten, in addition to receiving nominations for Fernanda Torres in Best Actress and International Feature.
Other big surprises this morning include Jeremy Strong and Sebastian Stan both getting in for their performances in The Apprentice, A Complete Unknown‘s James Mangold in Director over Conclave‘s Edward Berger, and Monica Barbaro in Supporting Actress for A Complete Unknown (a particularly welcome surprise). The Robert Eggers horror film Nosferatu got four below-the-line nominations, and the Latvian Animated Feature contender Flow also scored a coveted slot in International Feature.
Some of the biggest snubs were Clarence Maclin missing in Supporting Actor with Sing Sing, being unfortunately absent from the Best Picture lineup, despite receiving three other nominations (including Song). Other notable omissions are A Real Pain in Picture, Kneecap in International, and Will & Harper in Documentary Feature, with Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers also sadly getting completely shut out (no score, song, editing, cinematography, or screenplay nods). Guadagnino’s Queer was also shut out, with Daniel Craig being snubbed.
Though perhaps more of a long shot, Margaret Qualley also missed the Supporting Actress lineup for The Substance. But the film itself had an incredible showing nonetheless with its five nominations, including Demi Moore being the frontrunner for Best Actress, and Coralie Fargeat getting a much deserved slot in Director for the visionary horror satire. Fellow Cannes favourite Anora also figured prominently with six, including Sean Baker in Director, Mikey Madison in Actress, and Yura Borisov in Supporting Actor. These are the types of films I love to see rewarded.
As a final note, the Best Animated Feature category is surely one of the strongest lineups in recent memory, including Flow, Inside Out 2, Memoir of a Snail, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and The Wild Robot. All excellent films.
The full list of Oscar nominations in all 23 categories is below. The winners will be announced on Sunday, March 2nd beginning at 7:00 PM.
