4K Ultra HD Review: Wicked

By John Corrado

Please note that this is a review of the 4K Ultra HD release of Wicked. For my full thoughts on the film itself, you can read my full review right here.

After becoming a box office hit over the holidays, director Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked is now being released on physical media, including 4K Ultra HD.

Nominated for ten Oscars, the film of course serves as an origin story of the witches from The Wizard of Oz, and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the roles of Elphaba and Glinda. Both are nominated for their performances, with Grande being a surprise Best Supporting Actress favourite for her impeccable comic timing.

I really enjoyed this one when I saw it in theatres, and fans should be very happy with the at home presentation. The 4K disc is the way to go if you have the right setup, with so much detail packed into the film in terms of costumes and production design. The disc also includes both the theatrical and sing-along versions, for those who want to belt out the songs at home.

Film Rating★★★½ (out of 4)

Bonus Features (4K Ultra HD):

The disc also contains over an hour of bonus features and two separate commentary tracks. It’s a good assortment of material. A regular Blu-ray disc is also included in the package, which ships with a shiny slipcover.

Deleted and Extended Scenes (15 minutes, 36 seconds): A collection of brief moments trimmed from the film, mostly for time. There are a few character beats fans will enjoy. Presented in roughly chronological order.

  • Pfannee & ShenShen Meet Glinda (34 seconds)
  • Shiz Gazette Introduces Fiyero (1 minute, 34 seconds)
  • Toss Toss (1 minute, 48 seconds)
  • Elphaba & Fiyero in the Forest (1 minute, 39 seconds)
  • Elphaba’s Promise (1 minute, 56 seconds)
  • Train Platform Farewell (53 seconds)

  • Train Ride to Emerald City (2 minutes, 22 seconds)
  • In the Emerald City (1 minute, 25 seconds)
  • Palace Monkeys Chase (1 minute, 23 seconds)

Making Wicked (45 minutes, 45 seconds): A very enjoyable behind-the-scenes look, that takes us through casting the main actors, the close bonds they feel with these characters, building the large, practical sets (aided by blue screens), and developing the choreography for the dance sequences.

Welcome to Shiz (8 minutes, 2 seconds): A closer look at the production design of Shiz University, and the practical sets that were built.

A Wicked Legacy (4 minutes, 20 seconds): A look at the special cameos in the film, and how Chu and company paid tribute to the original Broadway production.

The Wonderful Wizard (3 minutes, 45 seconds): Jeff Goldblum briefly talks about taking on the role of the Wizard, and the work that went building the giant animatronic head.
