New releases for the week of February 7th, 2025.

Theatrical Releases:
Universal Language (Limited Release): This sophomore feature from Canadian director Matthew Rankin (The Twentieth Century) was Canada’s selection for Best International Film at the Oscars. It’s a wonderful absurdist dramedy that is set in an alternate universe version of Winnipeg, where everybody speaks Farsi instead of English. Rankin packs his film full of sight gags and some surprising pathos, and the result feels like Wes Anderson by way of Guy Maddin. Opens at TIFF Lightbox in Toronto, and screening as part of Canada’s Top Ten this weekend. (Full Review)
Love Hurts (Wide Release): Best Support Actor winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Best Supporting Actress winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) team up in this action comedy directed by former stuntman Jonathan Eusebio. The reviews for this one are pretty tepid, which is unfortunate considering the potential of having Quan and DeBose teaming up.
