Full Trailer for Live-Action Remake of How to Train Your Dragon

By John Corrado

Universal Pictures has released the full trailer for their upcoming live-action remake of DreamWorks’ excellent 2010 animated film How to Train Your Dragon. Disney has long been in the business of doing these reimaginings of their animated classics, so I guess it’s not surprising that DreamWorks Animation is now attempting a live-action remake of one of their films for the first time as well.

Mason Thames stars as Hiccup, and Gerard Butler reprises his role from the animated films as Stoick. While this trailer shows off more of this world and the characters, I’m still not entirely sold on the need for this remake. The CGI designs of Toothless and the other dragons do look good, and there are some nice visuals, but otherwise it looks pretty much like a shot-for-shot remake. The animated film already did this, and no doubt better.

The one thing this does have going for it is that Dean DeBlois, who directed the three animated films, is returning to direct this remake as well, which might be a promising sign. DeBlois also famously directed Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, which is also getting a live action remake this summer.

How to Train Your Dragon opens exclusively in theatres on June 13th. The full trailer is below, please feel free to comment your thoughts.
