Apple Original Films and Warner Bros. have just released the full trailer for director Joseph Kosinski’s Formula One movie F1, which will be given a theatrical release on June 27th. Kosinski, of course, is the director behind Top Gun: Maverick, and this is his first film since that box office smash. The studios are obviously hoping to recapture that success.
Brad Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, a driver who is brought out of retirement to mentor a rookie (Damson Idris). This is one of Pitt’s first big roles since winning the Oscar for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and he looks captivating. Javier Bardem and Kerry Condon round out the cast, which also includes a number of real Formula One drivers. Kosinski is shooting for authenticity here, and the racing scenes – shot by Maverick cinematographer Claudio Miranda – look slick and exciting.
It was “filmed for IMAX,” and that seems to be the ideal format to see the film, before it eventually lands on Apple TV+. The theatrical rollout is welcome. The full trailer is below.
