One of the upcoming summer films I’m most intrigued by is Weapons, writer-director Zach Cregger’s highly anticipated follow-up to his memorable breakout film Barbarian. This one is a missing person thriller heavily inspired by Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, with its intersecting storylines.
Warner Bros. has just released the first trailer for the film, following some viral marketing a la The Blair Witch Project. It looks incredibly creepy, and also just sort of incredible. I’m digging the eery, intriguing nightmare vibes of the whole thing. Julia Garner stars as a teacher who has all the kids in her class go missing at the same time one night. Josh Brolin is also in the cast.
The trailer has shades of Prisoners, and hints at how the film will meld psychological thriller with supernatural horror. The early buzz is very strong on this one, and I’m anticipating it could be this year’s Longlegs in terms of being a breakout hit. The film releases in theatres on August 8th.
