New This Week (05/16/2025): Friendship, Hurry Up Tomorrow, & More!

By John Corrado

New releases for the week of May 16th, 2025.

Theatrical Releases:

Friendship (Limited Release): Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave) stars in this absurdist comedy about male friendship. Robinson is Craig Waterman, a lonely suburbanite who befriends his cool guy neighbour (played by Paul Rudd), only for the friendship to go south. I saw this one when it premiered in the Midnight Madness section at TIFF last year (where A24 picked it up), and it’s a cult classic in the making. It’s very, very funny stuff, tapping into the unique comic personas of both Robinson and Rudd. Expands May 23rd. (TIFF 2024 Review)

Hurry Up Tomorrow (Wide Release): The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) stars as a version of himself in this misguided, over-stylized vanity project from director Trey Edward Shults (Waves, It Comes at Night). The reviews for this one have been atrocious, and after seeing it for myself today, I can see why. The film is convinced that it’s deep, but the whole thing feels empty and barely surface level. I like The Weeknd’s music, but he isn’t a good enough actor to sell any of this, from his pensive stares into the camera to comically overacted freak outs. (Full Review)

More Releases: Final Destination Bloodlines (Wide), The Unrestricted War (Limited), The Old Woman with the Knife (Limited)

Streaming Releases:

Deaf President Now! (Apple TV+), The Brutalist (Prime Video), Deaf President Now! (Apple TV+), A Working Man (Prime Video), The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives: Season 2 (Disney+)
