New releases for the week of May 30th, 2025.

Theatrical Releases:
Karate Kid: Legends (Wide Release): This latest reboot in the Karate Kid franchise brings together elements from the original films, the 2010 remake, and the Netflix series Cobra Kai. The film stars Ralph Macchio, Jackie Chan and Ben Wang in a new story set in New York. The reviews are somewhat mediocre, but I have a soft spot for the 1980s original (not so much the remake), so am curious to check this one out.
Bring Her Back (Wide Release): Australian YouTubers turned filmmakers the Philippou Brothers craft a solid follow up their 2023 breakout Talk to Me with this unnerving horror film that is designed to get under our skin. The main attraction is Sally Hawkins, delivering an absolutely deranged performance as Laura, the new foster mother to step-siblings (Billy Barratt and Sora Wong), who discover things are very wrong at their new home. It’s genuinely disturbing at times, and worth seeing for genre fans prepared for the unrelenting, dread-filled nature of it all. (Full Review)
Two Women (Limited Release): This modern remake of the 1970 Quebec film serves as a raunchy, female-centric comedy about Violette (Laurence Leboeuf) and Florence (Karine Gonthier-Hyndman), two mothers and neighbours in a suburban Montreal condo building who rediscover their sexual desires. I found it to be enjoyable and a lot of fun. (Full Review)
Do I Know You From Somewhere? (Limited Release): This debut feature from New Brunswick filmmaker Arianna Martinez serves as an ambitious, high-concept breakup movie. I was quite impressed by this one at TIFF last year (I’m even quoted in the trailer calling it a “very promising feature debut”), and it’s worth checking out. (TIFF 2024 Review)
More Releases: Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day (Limited), April (TIFF Lightbox)

Bono: Stories of Surrender (Apple TV+), The Better Sister (Prime Video), Dept. Q (Netflix)
