A24 has just released the official trailer for Eddington, the latest film from Ari Aster. Joaquin Phoenix stars in the “modern Western” as a local sheriff, running for mayor of the titular Texas town against the incumbent (played by Pedro Pascal). It’s also set during the COVID-19 lockdowns in the summer of 2020.

The film premiered to mixed reviews at Cannes, and this trailer – which offers a fuller look at the film than the initial teaser – shows why the reactions were likely so incendiary. Aster seems looking to provoke in his almost satirical takedown of everything that happened in 2020, and I’m very curious to see for myself where this goes.

The film opens exclusively in theatres on July 18th, and I’ll be reviewing this one. The full trailer is embedded below.
