Theatrical Releases:
The Life of Chuck (Wide Release): The People’s Choice Award winner from last year’s TIFF is finally opening in theatres today, and it’s something special. Director Mike Flanagan’s latest Stephen King adaptation unfolds through three distinct chapters presented in reverse, with an ensemble cast that comes together around the titular Chuck (played by Tom Hiddleston). The film keeps us engaged with its unique narrative, but it’s deeply moving as well. I was at that TIFF premiere, and haven’t stopped thinking about it ever since (including that euphoric dance sequence). It’s a beautiful, life-affirming film, and my favourite of the year so far. Materialists (Wide Release): This buzzy new release from A24 is writer-director Celine Song’s highly anticipated follow up to her exceptional 2023 debut Past Lives. And I loved it. Dakota Johnson stars as a New York matchmaker, who finds herself weighing her options between two romantic prospects; the rich new guy (Pedro Pascal), or her broke ex-boyfriend (Chris Evans). I honestly can’t say enough good things about this movie. The performances by the central trio are wonderful, and Song’s perceptive screenplay is rich with themes about how we choose the right partners. An intelligent, swoon-worthy romantic comedy drama that deserves to do well at the box office. (Full Review)
How to Train Your Dragon (Wide Release): This live-action remake of DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon is essentially a carbon copy of the great 2010 animated film. But it mostly works, thanks to a solid cast led by young actor Mason Thames, and the direction of Dean DeBlois, who returns to the franchise. I’m still not convinced of the necessity of these remakes beyond making money, but it’s the best version of one of these that we could’ve hoped for. Toothless is a delight, the flying scenes still soar, and John Powell’s sweeping score remains iconic. (Full Review)
